History

  • 2009. Community organizations came together to explore the issue of aging in Reston. In preparation, volunteers conducted extensive research and outreach to create the agenda for the “Aging in Community Forum(s)” that also featured a panel on community models from other parts of the country. Early leaders included Cathy Hudgins who later represented Reston on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Small groups engaged in a lively interactive dialogue that centered around gaps in services. Subsequent Aging in Reston forums focused on topics such as Fairfax County tax relief, the cost of home ownership and apartment rental in Reston, senior housing options, home modifications, legal documents to protect assets, investment strategies, and accounting and financing strategies.

  • 2011. Aging in Reston changed its name to Reston for a Lifetime (RFL) to encourage all ages to join in the effort to make Reston an even better place to live for everyone.

  • 2012. Focusing on transportation, RFL produced “Getting Around Reston" and in 2014 Reston won America’s Best Generational Community Award from Generations United and MetLife Foundation.

  •  2016. RFL introduced Neighbors Helping Neighbors, a volunteer model adopted from Fairfax County’s 50+ 2014 Community Action Plan.

  • 2017-2019. RFL partnered with Reston Association’s 55+ Advisory Committee to educate and encourage aging-in-place. Pre-Covid 2019, RFL partnered with Western Fairfax Advocates for Healthy Aging (WFAHA) to sponsor a series of in-person breakfast events addressing topics such as mental wellness and aging, life planning and paying for long-term care.

  • 2020-2021 RFL created a new vision and mission statement and refreshed its website to reflect its concentration on encouraging neighbors to help neighbors age in place.

  • 2022-23 RFL formed a board of directors, expanded partnerships, sponsorships and kicked off our first-ever quarterly webinar series. We presented at various community venues on aging in place and published our first annual report.
